Schweiss Doors designer doors open chic Florida restaurant
FAIRFAX, Minn., October 5, 2021 – PLANTA, a new vegan high-scale restaurant in West Palm Beach, Fla., led by international celebrated Chef David Lee and acclaimed restaurateur Steven Salm, opened in the spring of 2021. Known for its chic and sophisticated interiors, the eatery offers an elevated dining experience with an innovative 100-percent plant-based menu that promotes environmental sustainability.
The West Palm Beach location followed PLANTA’s already-established and successful locations in Toronto, Chicago and Miami. Forthcoming openings are planned for New York and Bethesda, Md.
The newest PLANTA restaurant, with seating for 200, has three Schweiss Doors bifold glass designer doors that open to additional outdoor seating and another that serves as its very first outdoor bar, using a Schweiss bar top outside serving window.
Two doors measure 8 feet, 10 inches by 11 feet, 5 inches, the largest is 11 feet, 2 inches by 8 feet and the smallest is 5 feet, 10 inches wide and 8 feet, 11 inches tall. Each door is equipped with gray liftstraps and manual latch systems with side latch switches. All four control panels are wall-mounted at one location. Building construction was completed by Mocha Construction of Miami, while the architectural work was done by STA Architectural Group of Miami. James S. Lavold Inc., of Jupiter, Fla., installed the doors.
“It really amazes me how versatile and diverse the Schweiss bifold and hydraulic door systems can be used on different types of construction,” Lavold says. “You can basically install Schweiss doors anywhere. This was the first high-end restaurant door installation for us. This particular project was kind of cool because it was in a real upscale area in the City of West Palm Beach.”
The restaurant owners and architects got the idea for these doors after seeing some Schweiss doors in operation at the City Place in West Palm Beach. City Place is an indoor-outdoor mall type gathering area within the city, with a theatre, restaurants, stores with refined Mission Revival architecture and palm-lined commons areas.
These bifold glass designer doors give the restaurant the flexibility of adding about 50 additional seats for customer who choose to sit outside at the year-round complex.
“With these doors, I think they wanted to give the restaurant an industrial look within their finished restaurant where everybody could see them operating,” Lavold says. “When we first opened the doors, the owners all kind of stood back and watched the doors go up and down. They thought it was really cool and said that was exactly what they were looking for.”
This location formerly housed a restaurant, but it was completely refurbished by PLANTA.
“What Schweiss delivered all worked out great,” Lavold says. “We did have to deal with their openings and some existing construction openings that weren’t perfectly plumb or level, so we had a lot of little adjustments to do to try and get the doors to close to where the floor matched the bottom of the door.”
Lavold says the City of Vero Beach was really, really happy with the liftstrap conversions they did on 14 hangar bifold doors finished there last year. Since then, he’s been invited to do a dozen other Schweiss Doors project at high-end residences and others he refers to as “mansions on the beach,” in addition to an office building in Ft. Myers.
“Schweiss has a better designed and cleaner operating system,” Lavold says. “I would definitely recommend Schweiss doors and strap conversions to others. We are actively seeking out new projects starting in Florida, but we will go anywhere.”

Planta1: PLANTA’s newest of its seven upscale restaurants has a 100 percent plant-based vegan menu. It is located in West Palm Beach, Florida. Following a total sophisticated interior and exterior renovation, it has three Schweiss bifold glass designer doors and a bar top door.
Planta2: The new PLANTA restaurant has seating for 200. The doors close weathertight and lock with a manual latching system. The side latch switches prevent the doors from opening while the latches are in the locked position.
Planta3: The bifold doors all open to an outside dining area that gives it additional seating for about 50 customers. During nice weather they can remain open into the night and provide a short canopy that will keep rain from entering the restaurant.
Planta4: A glass clad bifold bar top moving window enables customers or waitresses to place their orders with a bartender while dining outdoors.
Planta5: The exterior of the bar top door gives access to the many tables outside.
Planta6: Storefront looking windows were placed on the bifold doors to blend in with the other windows surrounding the first floor of the restaurant.
